Instructions

This performance dashboard was created by the new version of NFIRS 5 Alive. This example illustrates performance by station by shift over a 3-year period by Quarter. Here's how to get started:

Motion Chart

  1. Click on the long selection bar running vertically on the left side of the screen. Select "01_Incidents". This selection moves the dots (station / shift) higher based on the number of incidents. Move your cursor over one or more dots to display the station / shift.
  2. Click on the long selection bar running horizontally along the bottom of the graph. Select "07_Call to Arrival Percent @ 7". This shifts the dots to display arrival percentage a 7-minutes along the horizontal (X-axis). Move your mouse to hover over a station / shift in the list in the lower right of the screen. Your selection will be circled on the screen.
  3. In the "Color" selection bar in the upper right select "Station" at the bottom of the drop-down list. This will color each dot by it's Station ID.
  4. In the "Size" selection bar on the right side select ""01_Incidents". This selection will size the dots by the number of incidents by station / shift.
  5. In the lower left move the smaller gradient arrow (on the right) down to slow down the speed of the animation. Then press the larger animation button on the left to begin a display of activity over time.

Notice each color represents a station. Dots with the same color represent each of the three shifts; "A", "B", and "C". Can you spot any trends by station or by shift? Experiment with the model.

Animated Bar Chart

The dashboard can also function as an animated bar chart. Here's a step-by-step guide.

  1. In the upper right corner of the chart click on the graph tab that has three vertical lines.
  2.  Click on the long selection bar running vertically on the left side of the screen. Select "10_Travel Percent @ 4". This selection moves the bars (station / shift) higher based on better travel time compliance. Move your cursor over one or more bars to display the station / shift.
  3. Click on the long selection bar running horizontally along the bottom of the graph. Select the first option, "Order: Alphabetical". Move your mouse to hover over a station / shift in the list in the lower right of the screen. Your selection will be identified on the screen.
  4. In the "Color" selection bar in the upper right select "Station" at the bottom of the drop-down list. This will color each bar by it's Station ID.
  5. In the lower left move the smaller gradient arrow (on the right) down to slow down the speed of the animation. Then press the larger animation button on the left to begin a display of activity over time.

Experiment with different reporting options. Notice the trends. Test-out other features of the motion chart.

You can visualize station and vehicle performance for any time period you wish - from years to days. NFIRS 5 Alive created the HTML for this Google Motion Chart in less than 3-minutes. In order to publish the chart on your web site you'll need to sign-up for and download a free Motion Chart Java script from Google.

You don't have to work with HTML. You can also use NFIRS 5 Alive to load spreadsheet data into Google's free on-line spreadsheet application. Then simply select the spreadsheet's Motion Chart option to create the same Motion Chart from the Google spreadsheet. You will also have the option of linking to the Motion Chart in your Google account so others can view your chart without opening your account.
